As seen through the eyes of a child, Re / play is a project that explores the process of creativity and learning. We were all children once, and though we, as adults, may have lost touch with that curiosity and drive to discover through all of our senses—we are still creative beings and have access to boundless imaginings. A child’s point of view is endlessly fascinating to me—literally and figuratively.
Shapes echo each other in shadow or light, creating an exciting interplay between light and dark, positive and negative, that articulate my paradoxical feelings about parenthood. It’s like experiencing a quiet or controlled chaos or finding a middle ground or coexistence between two opposing viewpoints.
Objects such as blocks and paper airplanes serve as the artistic material and exposed on light sensitive paper or are rolled through a printing press onto thick white paper with no ink, leaving forms that, like memory, are given meaning more through intuition than logic. The composition mirrors the way such objects might be found on the floor of a home with children. I want the shapes to recreate the general impression of an experience rather than its details and invite the viewer to let go of the desire to categorize and to appreciate the messiness of creativity of play. The project constitutes an exploration of how we use time and the delight that comes when we allow ourselves to exist outside the pressure to be useful or productive and simply play.
